A: Your coach is absolutely right! Apart from risking theft, leaving skates in the car will damage them. The short answer is that figure skates are a leather product and leather does not do well in prolonged exposure to heat. Leather is a naturally absorbent material. If the inside of your car runs humid, which can be the case if you live in a warmer climate, the boot can soak up airborne moisture and lead to rot. Heat and humidity can also adversely affect the glue within the boot and prematurely break down your skates. Conversely, leather will crack if left in dry, low-humid environments. Both scenarios mean that your skates should never be left outside or in the car. It might be more convenient for you to just leave your skates in the trunk but, for the sake of your skates’ health, save yourself the trouble and take them inside with you.
